GTA 6 VRAM Requirements Checker

The VRAM calculator built for GTA 6. Pick a resolution, quality preset, and card — get the exact VRAM breakdown (texture pool, framebuffer, ray-tracing overhead, HD texture pack) and a verdict that says whether 6, 8, 12, 16 or 24 GB is enough.

How much VRAM you need for GTA 6 isn't one number — it depends on resolution, preset, ray tracing, DLSS 3 / FSR 3 frame generation, and whether you install the HD texture pack. This GTA 6 VRAM calculator adds those overheads separately, so an 8 GB card gets a clean pass at 1080p High but an honest "insufficient" at 4K Ultra + RT + HD textures. If you searched "is 8GB VRAM enough for GTA 6" or "GTA 6 4K VRAM requirements", the verdict above answers it in one line.

Adequate · meets total, 1.5 GB shy of recommended. GTA 6 needs 12 gigabytes at 1440p on Ultra. Your card has 12 gigabytes.

Sources & methodology references

External VRAM measurement data used to calibrate base pool sizes, overheads and headroom against RAGE-engine workloads.

Methodology notes

  • Base texture-pool sizes are calibrated from RDR2 and Cyberpunk 2077 telemetry at each preset.
  • Resolution multipliers (1080p × 1.00, 1440p × 1.28, 4K × 1.72) match pixel-scaled framebuffer and G-buffer measurements.
  • Ray-tracing overhead is derived from Cyberpunk 2077 RT-on-vs-off VRAM deltas at matched settings.
  • HD-texture-pack overhead scales with preset because higher presets already use larger mip levels, leaving less to swap in.
  • Recommended VRAM adds a per-resolution headroom band (1.0 / 1.5 / 2.0 GB) that maps to the driver's spillover threshold before texture pop starts.
  • Every card in the picker uses its manufacturer-spec VRAM in GB. VRAM-variant cards (3060 12/8 GB, 4060 Ti 16/8 GB, 5060 Ti 16/8 GB) are separate entries.

How much VRAM GTA 6 needs, setting by setting

Every toggle below has a measurable memory cost.

  1. 01

    Pick your resolution

1080p, 1440p or 4K. Framebuffers, G-buffer and post-processing chains scale with pixels — 4K needs ~1.8 GB more just to render a frame.

  2. 02

    Pick a quality preset

Low → Ultra maps to a texture-pool size. Ultra uses uncompressed streaming and is the single biggest VRAM lever.

  3. 03

Toggle ray tracing, frame gen and HD textures

Each adds a separate overhead. Ray tracing costs 0.8–1.9 GB depending on resolution. Frame generation adds 0.4–1.1 GB. The HD pack can add up to 2.2 GB.

  4. 04

See whether your card clears the stutter buffer

Pick your GPU or type a custom VRAM number. The panel shows delta versus need, whether you clear the recommended stutter buffer, and deterministic tuning tips if you're short.

VRAM verdicts for 6, 8, 12 and 16 GB cards

The four cases that cover most of the Steam survey.

  • 6 GB card at 1080p — GTX 1660 Super

Tight at 1080p High, insufficient at Very High and above. Drop textures to Medium and disable HD pack for a clean Adequate verdict.

  • 8 GB card at 1440p — RTX 3070 / RX 6650 XT

Comfortable at 1440p High. Adequate at 1440p Very High. Tight at 1440p Ultra + RT — turn off RT or run Very High for a clean pass.

  • 12 GB card at 1440p Ultra — RTX 4070 / RX 6700 XT

Comfortable at 1440p Ultra including ray tracing. Adequate at 4K High without HD pack. The sweet-spot 2026 tier.

  • 16 GB card at 4K — RTX 4080 / RX 7800 XT

Comfortable at 4K Ultra + RT. Add the HD texture pack and it stays Adequate. Zero VRAM anxiety for the launch window.

The VRAM budget model, line by line

Every preset carries a base texture-pool size in GB. Base scales with resolution (1080p × 1.0, 1440p × 1.28, 4K × 1.72) to account for framebuffers and G-buffer. Ray tracing, frame generation and the HD texture pack are separate additive overheads. Recommended VRAM = raw total + a per-resolution headroom band (1.0 / 1.5 / 2.0 GB) that maps to the driver's spillover threshold in RDR2 / Cyberpunk 2077 measurements.

base          = BASE[preset] × RES_MULT[res]          // GB
overhead      = rt ? RT[res] : 0
              + frameGen ? FG[res] : 0
              + hdTextures ? HDT[preset] : 0

totalGB       = round1(base + overhead)
recommendedGB = roundHalf(totalGB + HEADROOM[res])

verdict:
  card ≥ recommendedGB → Comfortable
card ≥ totalGB → Adequate (no reserve)
card ≥ totalGB − H → Tight (driver fallback zone)
otherwise → Insufficient (spillover to system RAM)

GTA 6 VRAM questions

Is 8 GB enough, does RT cost memory, what happens when you run out.

  • How much VRAM do I need for GTA 6?

At 1080p High, 8 GB is comfortable. At 1440p Ultra, 12 GB is the clean floor. At 4K Ultra with ray tracing, plan for 16 GB. The HD texture pack adds another 1–2 GB on top of any preset. Pick your resolution and preset above for the exact number.

  • Is 8 GB of VRAM enough for GTA 6?

Yes for 1080p High and 1440p High. Adequate — but no reserve — at 1440p Very High. Not enough for 1440p Ultra with ray tracing, 4K Ultra, or the HD texture pack at High and above. Stay at 1080p and skip the HD pack and an 8 GB RTX 4060 / RX 7600 will land in the Comfortable zone.

  • Is 6 GB of VRAM enough for GTA 6?

Only at 1080p Low or Medium without the HD texture pack. 6 GB (GTX 1660 Super, RTX 2060, RX 5600 XT) is below the 1080p High recommended buffer, and every other resolution / preset combination will fall into the Tight or Insufficient zone.

  • Is 12 GB of VRAM enough for GTA 6?

Yes at 1440p Ultra including ray tracing, and at 4K High without the HD pack. 12 GB (RTX 4070 / 4070 Super / RTX 3060 12GB / RX 6700 XT) is the recommended launch-window minimum if you play at 1440p and want headroom.

  • Is 16 GB of VRAM enough for GTA 6 at 4K?

Comfortable at 4K Ultra with ray tracing. Add the HD texture pack and 16 GB stays Adequate. 4K Ultra + RT + HD Pack + Frame Gen at once will push into the Tight zone — a 24 GB 4090 is the only card that stays Comfortable in that stack.

  • How much VRAM does GTA 6 ray tracing use?

Ray tracing adds ~0.8 GB at 1080p, ~1.2 GB at 1440p, and ~1.9 GB at 4K on top of the base preset. Path tracing (if Rockstar ships it) will add roughly 2× that. If your card is already Tight without RT, enabling RT will push it into Insufficient.

  • Does DLSS or FSR reduce GTA 6 VRAM use?

Upscaling shrinks the internal render resolution, which reduces framebuffer and G-buffer VRAM by 0.4–1.8 GB depending on mode and target resolution. Frame generation (DLSS 3 FG, FSR 3 FG) adds its own buffer — 0.4 GB at 1080p, 1.1 GB at 4K — so it partly offsets the saving.

  • How much VRAM does the GTA 6 HD texture pack need?

The HD pack adds an uncompressed texture layer on top of the preset's base pool. Overhead scales with preset: 0 GB at Low, ~0.4 GB at Medium, ~0.8 GB at High, ~1.4 GB at Very High, and ~2.2 GB at Ultra. Skip the HD pack if your card is under 12 GB.

  • Does GTA 6 use more VRAM than GTA V?

Yes — significantly. GTA V's Ultra preset fits inside 4 GB at 1080p; GTA 6's target-hardware pass points to 6× that budget on the same preset. Rockstar's Vice City rebuild is being authored at 4K asset resolution with higher-density streaming, so VRAM pressure at Ultra scales with texture density, not just pixels.

  • What VRAM do I need for GTA 6 at 4K?

4K High is comfortable on 12 GB, adequate on 10 GB. 4K Ultra needs 14–16 GB. 4K Ultra + ray tracing needs 16 GB comfortably. 4K Ultra + RT + HD pack + frame generation needs 20+ GB — that's 4090 / 7900 XTX territory.

  • RTX 3060 12 GB vs RTX 3070 8 GB for GTA 6 — which is better?

For raw rasterisation, the 3070 is faster. For VRAM headroom at 1440p Ultra or with the HD texture pack, the 3060 12 GB clears the recommended buffer while the 3070 8 GB lands in the Tight zone. If you run 1440p with textures maxed, the 3060 12 GB is the safer pick.

  • How accurate is this VRAM calculator before GTA 6 launches?

Close enough to plan a purchase, not close enough to quote. Base pool sizes are calibrated from RDR2 (same RAGE engine), Cyberpunk 2077 texture-pool telemetry, and modded GTA V HD pack allocation. Ray-tracing overheads match measured Cyberpunk RT / Path Tracing deltas. Expect ±10% versus launch-day drivers. We refresh within hours of Rockstar's official spec drop.

  • Will low VRAM cause stutter in GTA 6?

Yes — that's the exact failure mode of the Insufficient verdict. When VRAM overflows, the driver streams textures from system RAM over PCIe, and you get pop-in, texture LOD flicker and 1% low frame time spikes. Average FPS often looks fine; the felt experience is stuttery. Drop preset or resolution to bring VRAM inside the pool.

  • Does texture streaming need more VRAM than static textures?

Streaming uses less VRAM but more disk I/O. GTA 6 targets NVMe with DirectStorage; a slow SATA SSD (or worse, an HDD) forces the engine to keep a larger resident pool in VRAM to hide load stalls. On DirectStorage-friendly NVMe drives the calculator's numbers hold; on SATA SSDs plan for 10–15% more headroom.

VRAM and texture streaming terms

Vocabulary that shows up across the tool and the FAQs.

VRAM
Video RAM — dedicated memory on your GPU that holds textures, framebuffers, and render targets. Distinct from system RAM.
Texture pool
The pre-allocated VRAM region the engine reserves for texture streaming. Preset scales this pool directly — Ultra roughly doubles Low.
Framebuffer
The image being rendered plus depth and G-buffer targets. Scales with pixels: ~1 GB at 1080p, ~1.7 GB at 1440p, ~3.5 GB at 4K.
Ray tracing overhead
Extra VRAM used by BVH structures, ray payloads and denoiser targets. Adds 0.8–1.9 GB depending on resolution.
Frame generation
DLSS 3 FG and FSR 3 FG insert a synthetic frame between real ones, buffering optical-flow data in VRAM. Adds 0.4–1.1 GB.
DirectStorage
GPU-decompressed asset streaming from NVMe. Reduces required resident texture pool by streaming just-in-time.
